“Coffee in the Garden”
Medium: Gouache, Ink, and Watercolor
Wichita, KA USA

Denita Benyshek’s artwork “Coffee in the Garden,” created with gouache, ink, and watercolor, is a poignant reflection of her son’s journey through surgeries and recovery. Inspired by her son’s request for a garden to enjoy, Denita found solace and creativity in the serene moments spent in her garden with a cup of stovetop espresso.

Denita’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in her formal art education, including a BFA from Wichita State University and an MFA from the University of Washington in painting. Her exploration of art expanded through experiences such as receiving an artist-in-residence grant from the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming and studying at the Pilchuck Glass School on a full scholarship.

During her years of part-time teaching in the Alaskan bush, Denita honed her artistic voice, developing an intuitive, visual language reminiscent of Slavic perception. Her art reflects rich layers, visionary elements, nonlinear time, and a belief in the transcendent power of beauty.

In 2022, Denita relocated her family to Wichita, returning to her roots and immersing herself in creative projects. Her role as the artist-in-residence for Botanica Gardens through the Fisch Haus OpenStudios project marked a significant chapter in her artistic journey, leading to the creation of new garden watercolors and the subsequent Sacred Geometry series.

Denita’s artworks have found homes in public collections such as the University of Washington Medical Center, King County Ethnic Heritage Collection, Harborview Medical Center, Snoqualmie Point Park, and the Glass Museum in Ebeltoft, Denmark. Her solo exhibitions in various cities including Seattle, WA, Santa Fe, NM, Sun Valley, ID, Portland, OR, and Wichita, KS, have showcased the depth and diversity of her artistic expression.
